The Carnethy Five is a classic, tough and popular fell race just south of Edinburgh. This year saw nearly 500 runners braving the “Febuary” weather (warm temperatures, sun and no wind!).
This race always seems to go the same way for me, I tell myself that I’ll start conservatively, then I get caught up in what is always a fast start (500 people heading for a stile guarantees it! After three minutes I’m usually just behind the leaders, and feeling good, so my cautious start goes out the window and I decide to see how long I can hold in there. Given that this years leader was Rob Jebb, this wasn’t very long, and and I was left reeling for the rest of the race.
I ended up in tenth, just under five minutes behind Rob Jebb. More training needed!
The Carnethy five in one sentance: Fast enough to hurt, long enough to suffer!
